Children's Therapy

At Aire Valley Psychology, our Chartered Clinical Psychologist Dr Masley has specialised treatments available for children and young people with mental health difficulties or who have experienced trauma. Dependant on the issue the child is struggling with our psychologist will assess the best course of action. Initial screening takes place over the phone so that we can ensure we can provide the best therapy for the child, so be prepared to answer some questions before we agree to an initial consultation.

Our Treatments

The most common therapies we offer to children include Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR). These therapies will be adapted to the developmental age of your child. For Adolescents few adaptations may be needed but for younger children sessions will be focussed around play and drawing.

Parental involvement will depend on the age of the child and will be carefully considered on an individual basis. Younger children often have a parent accompany them to a session whereas older children / adolescents often have sessions without parents present.

Children and adolescents may need some help to understand and cope with intense emotional experiences. Anxiety, mood difficulties and trauma can interfere with a child/ young persons development causing difficulties within relationships, education and play. Within CBT I will work with your child to help them understand their personal experiences and own coping styles then develop new strategies and skills that may be more helpful to them. This allows them to move on quickly and minimise the negative impact on other areas of life and functioning. The way this will be done will depend on your child. For young children we may draw, play and craft whereas with older children it may be similar to adult therapy. Regardless of their age, I will work closely with them to achieve their goals.

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing is specialised psychotherapy used for a variety of difficulties. It can be helpful when a child has witnessed or experienced an adverse event (such as an accident) or when they have developed a phobia or anxiety disorder. This therapy aims to target painful and unpleasant memories and help the mind heal, using light and eye movement.

We charge £100 per 50-minute session, which should be paid on the day, either by bank transfer, cash or cheque.

Please note: We have a different fee structure for referrals seen via other agencies.
